Counseling Services FAQs

  • Our counselors, who are all licensed mental health counselors, assist and help students resolve personal, social, or psychological problems and difficulties. Topics can include anxiety, depression, stress, addiction, trauma, and relationships. We offer individual (face-to-face or online), couple, family, and group counseling.
  • Services are available to all full-time BYU–Hawaii students and their dependents.
  • Services are free to all full-time BYU–Hawaii students and their dependents.
  • Counselors are legally and ethically bound to maintain confidentiality regarding the things you share in counseling. Information may be released to school officials, friends, parents, or professors with your written permission. Exceptions to confidentiality, however, may include cases of endangerment to self or others, suspicion of child abuse or elderly abuse, responding to a valid court order, clinical consultation, or where a referral source has a need to know and the right to professional consultation for your welfare (i.e. hospital setting).
  • Counseling Services provides short-term, brief therapy and typically offers 12 sessions. If you require more extensive therapy, your counselor will discuss other treatment options with you.
  • Visit our Make an Appointment page, stop by our office in McKay Classroom Building Room 181, or call (808) 675-3518 to set up an appointment. Make sure to have your BYUH ID number ready, as this is a requirement for services.
  • Feel free to stop by and check, but it is recommended to book an appointment. However, if you are experiencing a mental health emergency during office hours, please come into the office immediately. Contact Campus Security if anything occurs outside of office hours – there is always an on-call counselor available.
